West Bronx

While The Bronx, as a whole, has many different neighborhoods and atmospheres, the borough is traditionally divided into East and West Bronx based on geographic location and when they joined the city. The West Bronx is everything west of the two major parks, Van Cortlandt and Bronx Park, and is filled with great sights, cuisine, and people.

Atmosphere of West Bronx

The atmosphere of this neighborhood depends heavily on where you are. Southwest Bronx, for example, has a lot going on. The streets are filled with people, the bars and restaurants are packed, and there’s a hustle that’s felt as soon as you arrive. This part of The Bronx is tough and proud while also being full of art and culture.

The Northwest Bronx is a lot more suburban. There are a lot more universities up here, with quieter neighborhoods and less busy streets. A more affluent section of the borough, this area almost feels like upstate New York, with a ton of trendy young folks and families adding an eclectic energy to the place.

Transportation Options in West Bronx

The New York City subway system provides excellent service to the West Bronx. The 1 train will take you up the westernmost side of the borough, while the 4, B, and D trains take you straight up the middle to the eastern side near the parks. The 2, 4, 5, and 6 trains provide access to the Southwest Bronx.

Biking is very popular in this area. There are a ton of Citi Bike docking stations and the city is adding more bikes every year.

If you want to drive in the West Bronx, you’ll find the northwestern portion easier to navigate than the southwestern portion. The southwestern part of the borough tends to have more traffic due to its proximity to Manhattan.

West Bronx Safety

This depends largely on where you are. The Southwest Bronx has a higher crime rate than the Northwest Bronx. That said, crime is on the decline everywhere in the borough, and violent crime is rare. There are many great hospitals in the area, like Lincoln Medical Center and Montefiore. All in all, The Bronx is way better than the media portrays it to be, and keeps getting better everyday.

Fun Facts and History of West Bronx

Well before The Bronx was part of New York City, the West Bronx was made up of three smaller towns. These towns were Kingsbridge, West Farms, and Morrisania. They are still listed as neighborhoods to this day, though Kingsbridge no longer includes parts of modern day Yonkers.

In 1874, these three towns were incorporated into New York City, becoming the first part of the city to extend beyond the island of Manhattan. The locals called this piece of land “The Annexed District” and it set the precedent for what would later happen to the East Bronx as well as Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.

The Bronx had a bit of rough and tumble history after joining NYC, becoming subjected to bootleggers and organized crime. Things only worsened when poor infrastructure decisions destroyed several neighborhoods, displacing thousands of people. New York began correcting these mistakes in the 1980’s through an intense revitalization effort. Today, the West Bronx is a haven for all kinds of art and cultures, and they remain tough as they continue to thrive.
