Fun Facts and History of Flatbush

Established in 1651, Flatbush went by the name of “Midwout” when it was still a young Dutch Colony. Once the British took over in 1664, Flatbush became the central area of the new King’s County, even being named the county seat. It would remain this way through the 1700’s and most of the 1800’s being a large hub for merchants and farmers.

Flatbush was incorporated into the larger city of Brooklyn in 1894 and subsequently turned into a residential neighborhood after 1898 when Brooklyn became a borough in the Greater New York City. Construction on new apartment complexes, mostly mid-rise art deco buildings, happened quickly as subway lines came to the area and opened it up to a larger portion of the population.

The neighborhood was so popular that it became the home to the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1958. However, due to several financial crises and a lack of aid from the city, Flatbush fell into disrepair. Many buildings were abandoned and crime rose until the 1990’s, when the city started paying attention to it again. Since the rejuvenation efforts of the 90’s, Flatbush has had a resurgence in popularity, even being named one of New York’s Next Hot Neighborhoods by the New York Times in 2016.

Flatbush Buildings

While Flatbush has seen a few high rises built in recent years, the vast majority of buildings are mid-rise apartment complexes and row houses. Most structures don’t go past six stories, leaving the Flatbush skyline a bit flat.

Atmosphere of Flatbush

Flatbush is a more quiet, suburban neighborhood. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops here, but the night life is not nearly as prominent as other parts of Brooklyn. This area is very relaxed, which is why it’s popular with families and young professionals who prefer a night in.

Many delicious restaurants line the streets of this neighborhood, making it a very popular area for friends to get brunch. These brunches are as raucous as the area gets. Even the bars that are here have a more relaxed vibe to them, hosting some music or comedy events every once in a while. All in all, Flatbush is a chill place where people can rest from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city.
