Part of the original city of Brooklyn, Prospect Heights was an important part of the agricultural practices and trade routes of the Dutch colonists who controlled the land in the 1600’s. After the American Revolution, Brooklyn’s population began to grow rapidly, and the land of Prospect Heights was sold to the city in order to build housing.
The original grid for Prospect Heights was drawn in 1833 and constructed in 1834, based largely on how the land had been run by the farmers who settled there. However, Brooklyn decided, as streets were still being constructed, to lay a new grid all together in 1839. A deal was struck to keep the streets already constructed which is why some of the streets in Prospect Heights are at a 45 degree angle rather than the traditional 90 degrees.
Once the grid was completed, housing came next. The 1890’s marked the beginning of the gorgeous brownstone row houses Prospect Heights is known for. Once those houses, and several mid-rise apartment complexes, were complete, Prospect Heights enjoyed a steady period of prosperity, barely being affected by the other financial crises that shook NYC to its core. Today, many high rise luxury buildings have been erected, along with the Barclays Center. This caused some contention in the 2010’s, but things have settled down. Now Prospect Heights is a beautiful mixture of old and new.
High rise and luxury buildings can be found near the Barclays Center, adding major eye-candy to the Brooklyn Skyline. That said, once you start moving away from the Barclays Center, the neighborhood becomes quite historic, with mostly brownstones and mid-rise apartment complexes lining the quiet streets.
Prospect Heights has two atmospheres depending on where you are. If you find yourself close to the Barclays Center, the energy will be much more enthusiastic due to the large number of events here. It’s also close to a lot of other popular Brooklyn activities which means it’s usually crowded with many folks walking around and having a good time.
The further into Prospect Heights you travel, you’ll find a much more subdued neighborhood. Quiet and classy, you can have a good time in Prospect Heights without getting too raucous. There’s a pleasantness to the neighborhood, making it both relaxing and inviting.

Prospect Heights is accessible via the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, and Q trains. Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center also provides access to the LIRR.
Biking is very popular in this neighborhood due to its light traffic, miles of bike lanes, and easy access to Citi Bike docking stations. This is easily one of the most cycled neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
Driving is also popular in this neighborhood due to the lack of traffic (Barclays Center being the exception) and ample parking.
