Fun Facts and History of Lincoln Square

Lincoln Square is a fairly new neighborhood, being built in the 1950’s and 60’s atop the former neighborhood of San Juan Hill, a once prosperous black community that fell into disrepair and ruin due to lack of support from the city. The neighborhood came into being when the Lincoln Center Renewal Project was pitched by John D. Rockefeller III along with other civil leaders.

The project changed the face of the entire neighborhood. While it remained primarily residential, the tenements of San Juan Hill were replaced with row houses and apartment complexes that displaced many former residents. Today, Lincoln Square is a quiet, affluent part of the city with a decent amount of commercial enterprises dotting the area.

Lincoln Square Buildings

Lincoln Square is a mix of low rise apartments, row houses, and high rise buildings. There’s a lot of luxury apartments and office spaces, as well as a few hotels. The skyline of Lincoln Square is bright, with Lincoln Center being the brightest while also being one of the shorter buildings in the area.

Atmosphere of Lincoln Square

Lincoln Square is a quiet, suburban area. There’s a decent amount of large consumer stores, restaurants, and bars, but not nearly as many as other neighborhoods have. Instead, the main focal point of this neighborhood is Lincoln Center, a large performing arts enclave with multiple venues, a library, and exhibits.

When it comes to the people who live here, they are usually in some sort of creative or academic field. This is an affluent, artistic neighborhood where successful creatives have easy access to the larger arts and cultural centers of Manhattan.

Family Score for Lincoln Square

Lincoln Square is ideal for families. Apartments and row houses here have tons of space, the area is one of the safest in the city, and there are numerous ways to educate your children, be it with schools or museums. With easy access to Central Park and the arts community, Lincoln Square is an area for families to thrive in.

Transportation Options in Lincoln Square

The New York City subway has several ways for you to travel to Lincoln Square, including the 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, and D trains.

Biking is also popular in the area due to the miles of bike lanes that have recently been added to the streets. While there can sometimes be heavy traffic in the area, bikers should be most wary of pedestrians, as there can be a lot of them, especially during Lincoln Center special events.

Driving is relatively popular here, though not as much as other affluent areas. Traffic can get heavy during rush hour and, while there is easy access to the West Side Highway, parking can be scarce and expensive.
