Central Slope's boundaries are hard to define, but the spirit of the neighborhood is easy. Chill and relaxed, Central Slope roughly runs from the bottom of Prospect Park, to the top, and is surrounded by Prospect Heights, Gowanus, and South Slope. When South Slope and Central Slope combine, they form the eclectic Park Slope.
Central Slope began life as farmland after colonization by the Dutch. It remained this way until The Battle of Long Island During the American Revolution. There it saw most of the fighting and casualties during the event, the end result being a loss and retreat for General George Washington.
During the 1800’s, the area saw a bit more development thanks to the ferry to Manhattan and, eventually, the railroads placed there. Development only increased with the construction of Prospect Park in the 1860’s. Larger homes were built near the park for great views, and the area became very upscale.
During the 1900’s, Park Slope fell into disrepair, especially during the depression. Racist policies and over policing only made the situation worse, resulting in multiple clashes during the Civil Rights Era. However, community leaders worked to end the turmoil, and the neighborhood was back to being prosperous by the 1990’s. Now Central Slope is a highly sought after neighborhood.
Central Slope has very few high rises. Rather, shorter apartment complexes and single family homes dominate the area. Near Prospect Park, large, beautiful homes line the streets. While Central Slope is flat, it’s still gorgeous.
Central Slope is a laid-back neighborhood made up of young professionals and families. Diverse and friendly, this neighborhood is full of neighbors waving to one another while friends and family hit up one of the many restaurants for brunch.
While Central Slope isn’t a party neighborhood, they know how to have a good time. Smaller bars and shops line the streets and make for a fun day whether you’re a local or a visitor. And since the neighborhood is right next to Prospect Park, there’s no limit to the fun you can have here.
Central Slope is great for families. There are plenty of great schools, hospitals are easily accessible, and there are plenty of outdoor activities available thanks to the proximity to the park. The noise level here never gets too bad either. All in all, Central Slope is perfect for families.
The New York City subway system provides access to Central Slope via a number of train lines. The Atlantic Avenue Barclays Center provides access via the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R, and W trains. The F and G trains also provide access to the neighborhood.
Biking is extremely popular in this neighborhood. There are many bike lanes and Citi Bike docking stations for your convenience.
Driving is also popular in this neighborhood. The streets are wide, traffic is light, and the parking is ample.
