Fun Facts and History of Williamsburg

Originally it’s own village, Williamsburg has had a long history as a home for Manhattanites seeking a less-expensive refuge across the river. Because of the convenience of the village, the population grew fast. It became the Town of Williamsburg in 1840, and evolved again into the City of Williamsburg in 1855. However, Williamsburg was soon incorporated into Brooklyn that same year.

Once Brooklyn became part of New York City in 1898, more transportation options were added, making Williamsburg very popular, especially among immigrant populations. Post-WWII, it became home to many Hasidic Jews as well as people from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. As industry declined in the 1970s, the neighborhood grew poorer, and crime increased.

However, over the past generation, young people led by artists and musicians have restored the community and turned it into a safe, upscale destination neighborhood. Today, Williamsburg is a trendy neighborhood full of trendy people.

Williamsburg Buildings

Historically, Williamsburg featured row homes and mostly single-family housing. However, since rezoning in 2005, the neighborhood has begun to expand into the sky, with a growing number of high-rises along the waterfront.

Atmosphere of Williamsburg

Considered a “hipster hotspot”, Williamsburg is a very vibrant and popular neighborhood in Brooklyn. It's especially alluring for the younger, hip crowd. It is filled with trendy eateries, boutiques and food markets.

The nightlife here draws crowds from every other borough. Many of the bars have rooms set aside for live events like music and comedy. Art is an important part of the culture in Williamsburg which is why so many young artists call it home.

Family Score for Williamsburg

Williamsburg is a very safe area with a low crime rate. With a good number of schools and easy access to hospitals, families can feel at ease here. The neighborhood is mostly a younger crowd, so noise is a given. However, if you don’t mind that, Williamsburg is a great place for families.
