Gowanus has a bit of everything. New, luxury high rises have been sprouting up, as well as shorter row houses. Old factories have been converted into apartment complexes and event spaces. For every new building in the neighborhood, an older one gets recycled.
Gowanus is an extremely trendy neighborhood. There’s always an event happening here 24/7, everyday of the year. The young crowd in Gowanus has shaped the neighborhood to fit their own image, and that image is one of creativity and free expression.
While Gowanus isn’t strictly an arts community, you wouldn’t guess that by visiting here. The galleries and event spaces always host special events featuring newer and well established artists, there are a number of theaters, and the bar scene is classy yet eclectic.
Gowanus is extremely safe and close to a number of hospitals. It also has access to many good schools and activities. The neighborhood can get a little raucous due to the late night scene. However, if you’re a family of artists, you might not mind that. Overall, Gowanus is pretty family friendly.
The New York City subway station provides access to Gowanus via the D, F, G, N, Q, and R trains.
Biking is extremely popular in Gowanus. The young crowd here loves to stay in shape, the streets are wide, and there are a ton of Citi Bike docking stations.
Driving isn’t popular in Gowanus, but it’s extremely doable. The traffic is light and parking is ample.
