Fun Facts and History of East Williamsburg

Williamsburg was founded in 1827 as part of the town of Bushwick. The village of Williamsburg expanded to the Newtown Creek in 1835, solidifying the boundaries most people know today. Once a sizable population of German and Irish immigrants began living in the area, Williamsburg became its own town in 1844.

Williamsburg would not be its own town for very long as, just one decade later, it was incorporated into the city of Brooklyn. It then became part of Greater New York City in 1898 as a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn. Once this change occurred, East Williamsburg was separated from Williamsburg based on district zones.

Though both neighborhoods were largely industrial, East Williamsburg had access to the Newtown Creek, opening it up to a wider variety of industries. Today, East Williamsburg is still largely industrial, but is slowly becoming more residential as abandoned warehouses and factories are converted into living spaces.

East Williamsburg Buildings

While East Williamsburg is becoming more residential, high rise luxury buildings are very rare in this area. Instead, the neighborhood sports several streets of row houses and mid-rise apartment complexes. Additionally, many of the abandoned warehouses and factories are being converted into living spaces keeping East Williamsburg relatively flat.

Atmosphere of East Williamsburg

This neighborhood has a rough exterior, especially given that its industrial past is still very much on display. There are a decent number of warehouses, some abandoned, some inuse. This can give the area a bit of a disheveled look.

That said, the people moving to the area are upping the cool factor by a lot. Mostly students and young artists seeking studio space, East Williamsburg is quickly becoming the trendy place to be. For many people, the rough look of the neighborhood only adds to the aesthetic.

Family Score for East Williamsburg

This area is very safe, with violent crime being extremely rare. While the neighborhood might not be the most attractive looking one, apartments here are usually a decent size. Some even come with an outdoor space. East Williamsburg could be a great family neighborhood if folks gave it a chance.
