Fun Facts and History of Battery Park City

Battery Park City is not an organic part of the island of Manhattan. Instead it was used as a port where several major accidents and sinkings had occurred. This left the area dilapidated and largely abandoned.

By the early 1960’s, New York was tired of these largely destroyed portions of land and sea and wrote up a proposal to create an extension of the island by way of landfill. In 1966, after several plans were hotly debated, the plan for Battery Park City was unveiled and construction soon began.

The island extension was done by filling the area with debris and bedrock from the construction of various Manhattan projects of the past, like The World Trade Center. While progress largely stalled in the 1970’s due to a financial crisis, some clever number crunching saved it. The landfill was finished by 1979 and the first of many residential developments started construction in 1980. Today, Battery Park City is 36 acres of luxury.
