When Cobble Hill was colonized by the Dutch, the area was used as farmland and a fort. The fort would stay standing throughout the American Revolution, and was one of the places George Washington retreated to after the Battle of Long Island.

Cobble Hill was made part of Brooklyn in 1834. In the 1850's, Brooklyn became extremely popular, and Cobble Hill built a ton of row houses that are still standing to this day. By the 1880's, Cobble Hill was packed with middle and upper class residents.
