DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN
Located by DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Fort Greene,
Boerum Hill and Vinegar Hill, Downtown Brooklyn is considered the
central business district for Brooklyn. Right in the heart of the
action, those looking to live here will have access to parks,
schools, and an easy commute to Manhattan.
Fun Facts and History of
Downtown Brooklyn
Downtown Brooklyn was one of the first parts of the borough to
be settled by the Dutch. When the British took over in 1664, the
area was turned into the central business district for the City of
Brooklyn.
Although the rest of the city was relatively indifferent to the
Slave Trade, Downtown Brooklyn was the rare exception. Full of
abolitionists, this neighborhood provided the massive support need
to get slavery abolished in New York in 1827.
After Brooklyn became part of New York City in 1898, business
ramped up in Downtown Brooklyn, but the number of people wanting to
live there ramped up as well. Today, Downtown Brooklyn is equal
parts…
