In the northernmost part of Queens, directly above Flushing, Whitestone is a calm residential neighborhood with two bridges, tons to eat, and a ton of space for those seeking to live here. Broken up into several sub-sections, Whitestone is an out of the way haven for the wealthy, middle class, and working class alike.
Whitestone began its colonial life as the estate of founding father, Frances Lewis. Said estate was even ransacked during the American Revolution. After the war, the land was sold to wealthy families so that they may also build large estates there.
Urban development didn’t begin until the 1920’s when railroads and bridges were constructed in the area. A separate, more upscale part of the neighborhood, known as Malba, remained larger family homes with yards, many of which still stand to this day.
Further development from highways connecting The Bronx to Queens and the rest of Long Island helped develop the neighborhood further. Today, Whitestone is a calm neighborhood with a wide variety of living spaces.

Whitestone is an area that has a lot of people, yet it doesn't feel crowded. That’s not to say the streets are empty. Far from it. There are a ton of stores, restaurants, and schools that keep people busy here. However, these things are spread out, which means the crowds are as well.
This is not a party neighborhood. Most spots in this neighborhood quiet down around 10 or 11, meaning the families that live here enjoy a sense of calm. It’s a bit out of the way from the rest of the city, and that’s how the residents like it.
Whitestone is great for families. There are plenty of schools, easy access to hospitals, and it’s close to plenty of green, outdoor spaces. The one concern might be the noise levels, not from the residents, but from the major highways. That said, the noise from these streets is at its peak during rush hour, and is almost never an issue late at night.
There are no direct subway lines to Whitestone.
Biking is reliably popular in this neighborhood. However, there are no Citi Bike docking stations and traffic can get pretty heavy here.
Driving is the most popular form of transportation in Whitestone. Traffic can get pretty hectic during rush hour, but there’s plenty of parking and the neighborhood is easy to navigate.
