Hugged by Forest Hills and Middle Village, Rego Park is the sleepy suburban neighborhood that many of the wonderful people of Queens call home. However, this diverse neighborhood isn't just a place for folks to hang their hats. Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, Rego Park was colonized by the Dutch and British around 1653. The settlement became known as Whitepot, and was incorporated into the Township of Newtown. The area was largely used for farmland, especially among British and Chinese immigrants, until the early 1900’s.
Whitepot eventually became known as Rego Park, “Rego” being an abbreviation for “Real Good” as in the Real Good Construction Company that developed the area to be more residential. Department stores were later added, making Rego Park a popular place.
The nieghborhood has often been a haven for immigrant populations, especially during WWII when many Jewish families escaping the Holocaust needed places to live. This diversity still lives on today, and the neighborhood’s shopping and culinary institutions receive the highest of praise.
Rego Park has a decent amount of luxury high and mid rise buildings. However, most of the area’s structures are flatter, never reaching higher than six stories or so. There are several new developments being built, so the ratio of high to low rise buildings should even out in the near future.
Rego Park is celebrated for its diversity. The restaurants and bars in this area are top notch and popular, but also very respectful to their neighbors. The area can be pretty quiet, which is a trait that’s enjoyed by most people who live there.
There’s also a lively shopping district in Rego Park that’s a little more crowded. They have several major retailers, including IKEA, so it’s a popular place for people to visit if they’re looking for quality products at great deals.
Rego Park is extremely family friendly. Queens, overall, is a very safe place to live and provides access to many schools, hospitals and activities. Things can get a little noisy if you live near the shopping centers of the area, but even then, it calms down at night. All in all, Rego Park is a great place for families.
The New York City subway system provides access to Rego Park via the M and R trains.
Biking is relatively popular in this neighborhood. You won’t find many Citi Bike docking stations, but cyclists can look forward to mild traffic and a good amount of bike lanes.
Driving is very popular in this area. Parking is ample and traffic is light.
