Red Hook

Red Hook is a fun filled, waterfront, residential neighborhood right next to Carroll Gardens. While most people think of Red Hook as "The neighborhood with the IKEA," there's so much more to see here, including museums, restaurants, and even an art gallery or two.

Fun Facts and History of Red Hook

Named by the Dutch for the red clay that was found here when the area was colonized in 1636. The area was used for shipping and family estates until the American Revolution, when a large fort, called Fort Defiance, was built just before the Battle of Long Island.

The 1800’s saw Red Hook transform into an industrial powerhouse. The ports were revitalized between the 1840’s and 60’s due to the deepening of the Gowanus canal and increased business from the formation of the Erie Canal. One might think this was great for the neighborhood. However, this success attracted organized crime by the 1920’s.

Red Hook continued to have a poor reputation throughout the 1900’s, though industry continued to thrive there. It wasn’t until NYC went through a massive revitalization effort in the 1990’s before Red Hook began to improve, especially with the addition of the IKEA. Now popular with artists and young professionals, Red Hook is a neighborhood in rapid growth.

Red Hook Buildings

Being a largely industrial area, the buildings here are mostly shorter. There are several high rises the further inland you go. However, most of the structures here are flat, never really reaching higher than six stories.

Atmosphere of Red Hook

Red Hook is going through a change. Still largely industrial, the affordable rent has attracted residents and businesses alike. The population is growing steadily and more is happening in the neighborhood in terms of events, shopping, and dining.

While still not a party neighborhood, the crowd here is a bit younger than other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. This means the energy here is palpable and fun. Red Hook is a fascinating combination of a residential neighborhood and an industrial one.

Family Score for Red Hook

Red Hook is okay for families. Schools here are good and it’s close to hospitals. There’s also plenty of green space for outdoor activities. Most residents here are on the younger side, so noise might be an issue. However, if that’s not a deal breaker for you, then Red Hook would be a good spot for your family.
