Fun Facts and History of Midtown South

Midtown South has been a major part of NYC since the 1800s, but the early 20th century is when the neighborhood really came into its own. It was in Midtown Manhattan where many of the earliest skyscrapers were built, like Grand Central Station in 1913, the Chrysler building in 1928, and the Empire State Building in 1931. All of these buildings are national landmarks, and celebrate the art deco style that NYC is known for.

The other famous part of Midtown South is the Garment District and Koreatown. The Garment District has been around for a while, originally sewing clothes for enslaved people until NYC outlawed slavery in 1827. Afterward, the district largely made uniforms for soldiers, especially during the Civil War. After the war, the district switched to making clothes for everyday use, theater productions, and fashion, which is what it’s still largely used for today. Koreatown sprouted from the district in the 1980’s, when many Korean immigrants moved to the area and started thriving businesses there.

Midtown South Buildings

Most of the architecture here are skyscrapers, towering over the streets. These buildings hold offices and apartments, and are typically art deco, though newer buildings are found here and there. Mid-sized offices, businesses, and apartment complexes can also be found in the area, but smaller buildings are hard to come by unless you’re heading to the East or Hudson River.

Atmosphere of Midtown South

This area is one of the busiest in the city, swimming with tourists shopping and sightseeing, as well as locals working in the area. The sidewalks are always packed with people and the streets are always filled with traffic. Because it’s so busy here, there are a ton of restaurants, bars, museums, and activities to keep people entertained.

Being a big business center, things do calm down a bit after 5pm, but not by much. This area has a big night life, and is full of entertainment venues like Madison Square Garden. This means that peace and quiet can be hard to come by here.

Family Score for Midtown South

If you’re a family visiting the area, then you’ll love it here. There are a ton of shopping and entertainment opportunities that will keep the whole family entertained, as well as the iconic sites that draw people to the city in the first place. That said, living here can be a bit of a challenge. First, it’s expensive due to its location, but it can also be noisy, even if you’re higher up in an apartment complex. The area is safe, it’s just hard to find a place to get aways from the noise.

Transportation Options in Midtown South

Midtown South has a ton of transportation options. The MTA, especially, makes it extremely easy to get around. On the west side of the neighborhood are some of the busiest train stations in the city, including Times Square 42nd Street, Harold Square, and Penn Station. These stations are serviced by the A, B, C, D, E, F, M, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains. On the east side of the neighborhood, Grand Central Station is serviced by the S, 4, 5, 6, and 7 trains, as well as MetroNorth, LIRR, and Amtrak.

Biking is popular in the area, and there are a decent number of Citi Bike docking stations here for your convenience. However, the streets are very busy and, in many cases, quite small and under construction. Even with the miles of bike lanes that have been added to the area, it’s still important that cyclists pay attention to their surroundings. Pedestrians and cars need to do the same in order for everyone to be safe.

Driving is extremely popular in this area, and the number of parking garages here make it easy, albeit expensive, to park your car for the day. Unfortunately, traffic in the area can be awful, even during less busy times of day. This means that trains, buses, and walking are going to be the safest bet when it comes to getting around this area.
