Kips Bay

Snuggled next to the East River between 23rd and 34 street, Kips Bay is very popular with families due to the great schools, hospital access, and general safety of the area. However, there has also been an increase in young professionals seeking to rent in the neighborhood as businesses continue to expand in Murray Hill and North Manhattan.

Fun Facts and History of Kips Bay

Kips Bay receives its name from the Kips family farm off the bay of the East River. The area in the 1600’s and 1700’s, was mostly farmland. As the decades went by, more and more of the land was bought off to make room for city developments. For example in 1794, Bellevue Farm was purchased in order to construct a medical facility, and in subsequent years, parcels of Kips Bay Farm were purchased to expand the facilities.

Kips Bay in the 1800’s saw more of the same, land and markets were bought and moved uptown to make room for small business and row houses. By the 1900’s Kips Bay looked pretty much the same for the next 60 years until high rise buildings started showing up.

Kips Bay Buildings

Kips Bay is a mixture of classy restaurants, educational institutions, row houses, and the occasional high rise apartment complex. Most structures here are low to mid rise buildings, but Kips Bay has its share of historic architecture too, home to one of the only wooden houses left on Manhattan.

Atmosphere of Kips Bay

Kips Bay gives off a homey suburban feel, with an ample supply of everyday conveniences like grocery stores and ATMs. The neighborhood is spotted with many micro-neighborhoods such as Curry Hill, where the 20-something streets cross Lexington. It offers a myriad of ethnic foods and groceries, including Trader Joe's.

The south east corner of Kips Bay houses Baruch College, and various cheap college hangouts. As you move further east, it becomes more residential. Overall, Kips Bay is a very low key neighborhood. There’s plenty to do, but it’s mostly a family friendly place to relax after a busy day.

Family Score for Kips Bay

Kips Bay is perfect for families. With plenty of multi-family or single family homes to choose from, terrific schools, and access to many healthcare facilities, Kips Bay is one of the best places in Manhattan to plant roots. With NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center making their homes here, residents may hear sirens more often than they would like. However, that’s pretty much the extent for noise complaints.

Transportation Options in Kips Bay

This small residential neighborhood almost seems to be hiding from the rest of the city. The only subway stations even close to it are the 23rd, 28th, and 33rd street stops on the 4, 5, and 6 trains.

That said, biking is extremely popular here, with bike lanes on every major avenue and most streets. Kips Bay also has a decent number of Citi Bike docking stations for your convenience.

Driving isn’t the most reliable way to get around the neighborhood, but it is doable. The traffic isn’t as bad as the rest of Manhattan, but it can still get congested. This neighborhood is very walkable, so most people decide to stick to pedestrian methods of transport, especially when going into other parts of the city.
