Fun Facts and History of Gramercy Park

Gramercy Park was the first great example of city planning in the United States. Sprouting up from the park which gives the neighborhood its name, people had to follow strict rules when building homes and structures around the green space. The park was constructed in 1832 and fenced in in 1833.

People started building around the park in the 1840’s as a way to revitalize the area after a major depression a few years earlier. Trustees of the park met in 1844 and made a plan for how to layout the development they wanted.

From there, building anything in the neighborhood goes through a rigorous process. Several train lines and buildings were outright rejected, but the process started to ease in the early 1900’s when several hotels were built in the area. Over all the neighborhood has kept its Victorian looks and affluence, surviving several more financial crises that shook the rest of the city. Today, the neighborhood is popular amongst the youth and elite of the city due to its fun bars, amazing restaurants, and vibrant live music venues.

Gramercy Park Buildings

Luxury high rises are few and far between in this historic neighborhood. In their place are brownstone houses and mid-rise apartment complexes. There is a concerted effort to keep the neighborhood historic, so many of the buildings here have been landmarked by the city and state.

Atmosphere of Gramercy Park

Gramercy Park is affluent, but not elitist. Anyone is welcome to enjoy the neighborhood, but they should expect a heavy hit to their wallets. That said, if money is no object, Gramercy Park is full of fun and adventure. The nightlife here is eclectic and weird in the best way possible, the restaurants are some of the fanciest in the city, and there are many opportunities for shopping.

For those who live in this area, they enjoy spacious apartments and houses. Though the nightlife here can be very apparent, it can also be a sleepy neighborhood depending on where you go. Families find themselves very comfortable here.

Family Score for Gramercy Park

Gramercy Park is one of the safest areas in Manhattan. With large apartments that are close to schools and hospitals, this is one of the better neighborhoods for families. The only issues with this area is that the nightlife can be a bit rowdy and it can be a bit expensive. Other than that, families are very happy living here.
