DUMBO started out as a neighborhood in Brooklyn known as Olympia. In the late 1700’s, private landowners purchased much of modern day DUMBO and turned it into Summer homes for wealthy Manhattanites. While this dream never really took off, DUMBO was a popular port neighborhood for those traveling from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
Factories began popping up around the mid 1800’s and DUMBO became a place of industry for the next few decades. DUMBO was known for innovation as well, especially in 1890 when the cardboard box was invented there. DUMBO would remain largely industrial, even after World War II.
After many of the factories and office buildings were abandoned in the years after the war, artists began to move to the neighborhood in the 1970’s. It was then that the acronym “DUMBO” was invented as a way to deter developers from seeing the area as a potential money maker. This, however, didn’t work and soon the art galleries attracted tech companies. These new industries made DUMBO rich and today it’s still a wildly popular neighborhood.
DUMBO has a little bit of everything when it comes to the buildings here. There are old ones, new ones, tall ones, short ones, and, of course, the Manhattan Bridge itself. DUMBO does everything in a unique way.
DUMBO is basically the Silicon Valley of Brooklyn. It’s hip, technologically savvy, and eclectic. The arts scene here, as well as the food, is top notch. People come from all over the city to hangout in DUMBO.
Full of young professionals, DUMBO knows how to party. The bar and late night scene here is a blast and there’s always something new and interesting going on. DUMBO is the embodiment of NYC hustle, and the people who live here fight for their dreams everyday.
DUMBO is extremely safe and close to several hospitals. However, there aren’t too many schools here and the younger crowds that frequent the area can be a bit loud. This is why DUMBO is a family friendly place to visit, but larger families, especially, might not enjoy it here.
The New York City subway system provides access to DUMBO via the F train.
Biking is extremely popular here. Traffic is never too bad and there are many Citi Bike docking stations around for your convenience.
Driving isn’t super popular here due to the location, but it is doable. Parking is pretty easy to find and things only get hectic traffic wise if you’re heading to one of the bridges.
