How to Make Your Bedroom Feel Bigger

Having a large bedroom is something everyone wants. You want a place to relax and enjoy without feeling cramped. However, with rent and home prices being incredibly high in most of the country, a ton of space is often hard to come by. As a result, having a huge bedroom is largely a pipe dream for many people (especially for people who live in New York). However, that doesnโ€™t mean you are banished to sleeping in what looks like the equivalent of a broom closet. In fact, there are many different ways to make your bedroom feel and look larger, and we will look at some of them in this article. Some of these are incredibly quick and easy, and will work wonders in making your bedroom appear much bigger than it really is.

1. Make your bed functional

In almost any bedroom, no matter its size, the biggest piece of furniture is often the bed. It takes up a ton of space in a small bedroom, especially if you need a large bed. However, that space under your bed doesnโ€™t need to only be occupied by air; you can actually put it to work. Whether you decide to use under-bed storage baskets or buy a bedframe with drawers in it, your bed has much more potential than just being a place to sleep and binge watch your favorite Netflix shows.

2. Have smaller furniture and maximize wall space

This one seems pretty obvious but is also worth a mention. If you have a small bedroom, you should look to invest in furniture that is smaller. A dresser instead of an armoire, a chair instead of a couch, things like that. Maximizing wall space simply makes the room look less โ€œemptyโ€ which can make it look bigger. If every piece of furniture in your room goes right up against the wall and goes a good way up the wall, your room will look much smaller, plus it will leave less room for practical decorations. Artย is a great thing to make a room look bigger (as it takes your eyes away from the physical dimensions of the room), but too much are will just clutter the room.

3. Change up the paint and color of the room

Something as simple as changing up the color of a room can have a huge impact on how big or small the room looks. Dark colors in a little room make it feel like a cave, so you definitely want to opt for a lighter color to make the room feel bigger. A painting trick that can sometimes make a room seem bigger is by painting everything in the room a similar tone or color. By having walls, ceiling, woodwork, and accents the same color, it will trick your eyes into believing the room is bigger.

4. Reduce clutter and increase storage

Whether in your bedroom or any other room in the house, clutter is the biggest thief of space. The more items you have in your room, the less space you will have, simple as that. While you canโ€™t have a completely barren room, there is a good chance you donโ€™t need everything that is currently cluttering up your bedroom. Your eyes should be able to scan a room as soon as you get into it, without being completely bombarded by things on the ground, things on shelves or things on a desk. Instead, either spread the items out throughout the rest of your home or build/buy some storage bins or baskets to clean things up a bit. Extra storage is a great thing to have in a small bedroom and you should get it wherever you can. Your nightstands should have storage, and there should be other places in your closet or dresser for miscellaneous storage too.

5. Mirrors are your best friend

Mirrors are not only places to look at how beautiful you are, they are also a great way to make a bedroom look bigger. Whether they make it look like you have a window to another room, or simply use it to make the room appear grander, mirrors are always a good idea in the bedroom. In addition to that function, mirrors also can make a nice decorative addition to any room. However, make sure not to have too many mirrors in the bedroom or that would simply look strange in a small room. If you have access to windows (large or small) in your bedroom, having them open can also make your room look larger.

6. Pay attention to the ceiling and the lighting

In many rooms, no one pays attention to the ceiling. However, if your bedroom is small, making changes to the ceiling can be one of the best ways to make it seem larger. While you often canโ€™t do a ton to the ceiling, making sure it is a light or bright color can make the room look bigger. If your room and ceiling are well-lit, the room itself will also look larger. If it is dimly lit, the room can often look like a cave. Also, if you have the option, get a tray ceiling. These ceilings will add depth to your ceiling that will add noticeable space to your room.
