1. Nitehawk Cinemas – Located at 136 Metropolitan Ave
Nitehawk Cinemas is not your traditional movie theater. While most theaters are full of people nibbling on candy or popcorn, Nitehawk has people demolishing burgers, sandwiches, and other treats. Nitehawk is part cinema and part restaurant to give visitors a very unique experience. Not only does the cinema serve real food and drink, but it also tailors the menu based on what films it is showing. The film shows both new and classic films, and has special screenings such as brunch screenings, midnight screenings, and more. Nitehawk is truly one of the best and only places to catch a new release while eating some world class cuisine. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $9 for children, and $16 for special events. 2. AMC on 84th – Located at 2310 Broadway St between 83rd and 84th St
If we had written this article even half a decade ago, there is almost no chance this theater would be on this list. However, after undergoing a massive makeover that gives Khloe Kardashian a run for her money, it deserves a spot. After a 2013 renovation that saw this theater change in almost every way, it is now one of the best spots to see a film in all of New York. Screens were replaced, sound was upgraded and the old seats were replaced with extremely soft and comfortable reclining seats.
These seats mechanically recline to an almost laying down position, without even getting in the way of the person in front or behind you. This theater also allows you to reserve your seats in advance, which stops you from having to come extremely early to make sure you get a spot. It is also in a great location as it is near the subway and various different restaurants. Because of the seats and atmosphere of this cinema, it will cost you $19.99 as an adult and $16.99 as a child to see a movie here.
3. Landmark Sunshine Cinema – Located at 143 East Houston Street
Landmark Sunshine stand out in a community full of art house style theaters. Residing in a 1998 building, the Sunshine Cinema is a true classic spot on the Lower East Side. This theater shows a good mix of modern, classic and independent films, while offering up delicious eats and stadium-style seating. This theater has gorgeous design and is among the most energetic places to check out a midnight film. In fact, don’t be shocked to hear people reciting quotes from classic films during these showings! Also, with rumors that this cinema might be converted into apartments or condos within the next few years, there is no better time to check it out than right now. Tickets here are a bit more expensive at $13.50 for general admission, $11 for a child, and $10 for a senior.
4. BAM Rose Cinemas – Located at 30 Lafayette Ave
Originally a music hall, this venue was converted into theaters way back in 1998. While the area has been renovated, the tiered seating has remained, which gives many theaters a more traditional look and feel. While the screens here are fairly small by modern standards, the wide array of films shown here make up for it. You can see everything from brand new flicks, to cult classics, to independent films and everything in between. This theater also hosts the BAMcinemaFest film festival in late June. It shows some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films from many of the most popular festivals in the world. The BAM Rose Cinemas also frequently hosts special talks from big name guests. Tickets here will cost you $14 for general admission or $10 if you are a student or a senior.
5. Museum of the Moving Image – Located at 36-01 35th Ave
If you want to learn about all things film while enjoying a screening, this is definitely the place for you. The MOMI is a media museum located in Queens that doubles as a great place to catch a film. Whether you enjoy modern, classic, or foreign films, you will enjoy this place as it shows them all. It has numerous theaters and showings, and some of the showings even offer live discussions and question sessions. You can also learn about the film process and industry, while also attending events where directors and actors speak about their craft. Tickets are $12 for an adult, $9 for a student, $9 for a senior, and $6 for children.
