CUNY Hunter College Apartments for Rent in New York, NY

About the University

Founded in 1870, Hunter College is known as one of the oldest public colleges in the United States. Originally a women's college, Hunter began admitting men in 1964. Currently, there are 23,000 students from over 150 countries attending Hunter College (Hunter College is the largest college in the City University of New York [CUNY]). Hunter offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 170 areas of study. Hunter officially became a part of the CUNY in the 1950s.

Notable alumni of the University include Vin Diesel, Audre Lorde, Sylvia Porter, Elena Kagan, and Leon G. Cooperman.

Where are the academic buildings?

Hunter's main campus is located between 67th and 69th Street from Park Avenue to Third Avenue. While most students attend school on main campus, there are two other satellite campuses located in the city. Hunter's two satellite campuses are the School of Urban Public Health, Silberman School of Social Work and Centro (located East 119th Street & Third Avenue) or the School of the Health Professions (located at East 25th Street).

Students are expected to commute to school either by walking, biking or taking public transportation. Since the most of the academic buildings are located conveniently on the East side of Manhattan, most students will take the 4,5,6, Train or simply loan a Citi bike to navigate their way around the city.

Where are the residence halls?

Hunter College currently offers housing at three different locations: Brookdale Campus (located on East 25th Street btw First Ave & FDR Drive), 92nd Street Residence (located on 92nd Street & Lexington), and finally at 97th Street Residence (located on 97th Street & Third Avenue). Due to the fact that housing is not a requirement for students, only a limited number of Hunter's students will get a chance to live within the residence halls. Thankfully most students choose to live off campus in surrounding neighborhoods or close by boroughs.

As all three campuses are located on the East Side, most students will commute to classes by taking the 4, 5, 6 Green Line or take the bus. Some students may also choose to walk to bike to class (though, that would be quite the feat).

Where do students live other than dorms?

As explained before, because of the lack of availability in housing, most students choose to live off-campus in surrounding neighborhoods and boroughs. Neighborhoods located around the main campus that are also affordable for students include East Village, Lower East Side, Upper East Side, East Harlem and Chinatown. Many students may also choose to live in boroughs such as Brooklyn or Queens to save on rental costs.

Where do alums live if they stay in the city?

While most alums graduate and move out of the city, those who remain choose to live all over Manhattan and neighboring boroughs. Some popular neighborhoods may include Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, etc.
