"fengshui"

This article serves as the last article in our 4 part Feng Shui guide. We have looked at the bedroom, the bathroom, and the kitchen. We can’t end a Feng Shui guide without mentioning one of the most used rooms of an apartment, the living room. Living rooms are an integral part of any home, and that also reigns true for the Feng Shui of the home.

One of the biggest challenges of living room Feng Shui is making sure that you can create a space that is not only practical and useful, but beautiful and lends to happy energy and a good energy. Here are 7 great and easy tips to make sure the Feng Shui in your living room is the best it can be.

1. Make Sure it Looks Good and Functions the Same

As mentioned in the introduction, it’s important that your living is both beautiful AND functional. Of course, if your family is spending a ton of time in a room, you want it to look good so it can bring about positive emotions and energy. However, if you sacrifice practicality for it to only look good that will lead to some Feng Shui problems. Balance is important here, as you want it to look good but also be a place where people (children and pets included) can kick back and relax without worrying about disrupting the beauty of the room.

2. Have a Bright and Vibrant Front Door

The Feng Shui of the living room starts with the door. While the idea of painting your front door in a bold or bright color is relatively new in the West, it has been a thing in the East for a very long time. This gives a great start to the Feng Shui before anyone steps foot into the home. As for what colors you should choose, the options depend on which direction the front door of your house faces. Black or dark purple is ideal if your door faces north but red is best for a home with a south facing door. If your door faces west opt for earth tones. If it faces east blues and greens are preferred.

3. Choose Your Decorations and Colors Wisely

Out of everything in a room, there are very few things that have as big an impact on our moods and the energy of a room than the color. Color is very important in a living room, just as it is in any room. The color in your living room should be welcoming and calming, instead of loud and jarring. The colors can vary greatly based on your preferences and bagua ( a Feng Shui energy map) but you should likely opt for softer and lighter colors for your walls and choosing to be a bit more “brash” with your furniture or decor. The decor of a room can vary greatly but one idea that is consistently good for Feng Shui is a bowl with crystals or other symbols of wealth on the coffee table. Art and pictures that focus on positive energy and situations are encouraged as well.

4. Rules About the Television

Fact is, most of us have a TV somewhere in our living room. It’s the place where family gets together as well as single individuals go to rest and relax. So it would make sense for a TV to be present in the room. However, having a TV in your living room can actually be bad Feng Shui. It’s recommended that you have a separate room to watch TV in, but if that’s not possible, there’s another option. The position of the TV doesn’t matter much, as it’s more about concealing the TV as much as possible. The best option is to have the TV behind some sort of sliding door or entertainment center so it can be hidden when it’s not in use.

5. Make Sure the Furniture Placement is Correct

Where you place your furniture is about as important as the color scheme of the room. The best way to arrange your living room is so that every piece of furniture has enough “breathing room.” Why? So the room doesn’t feel too cramped. You want everyone in the room to feel relaxed, calm, and at-ease. In terms of specifics, you should ensure that your sofa is either against a solid wall, or a few inches away. You should also be able to see the main entrance of the house from the main couch.

6. Organization is Key

As with any room, being able to navigate the room easily and find things is very important. Things not being organized can lead to a ton of negative emotions such as anger, frustration and more. These emotions can ruin the energy of a room in no time at all. However, if your living room is organized, and everything is where it should be, you will feel calm which can help positive energy flow. Keeping things like remote controls, books, and other common living room items in the same place every day can help with the problem of losing items.

7. Don’t Forget Some Creativity Though

While there are definitely some fairly strict rules when it comes to achieving the best Feng Shui in your living room, don’t be afraid to add a bit of personality. Remember, it is you and your family who will be spending time here. If something that is common for good Feng Shui leads to negative energy for your family, change it. Your room should include artwork, furniture, and decor that you enjoy, as the true principles in Feng Shui are about feeling good and living good. Form and placement are quite important in regards to the energy of the living room, so if those are under control, feel free to add some personal touches to your living room.
