If you’re moving into your first apartment or home, you may be overwhelmed with how many decisions must be made – what couch to get, what sheets to put on the bed, and how to decorate. One crucial thing that is often overlooked is furnishing the kitchen – while you may not need a standing mixer (yet), you will need a few essential items to make sure you can prepare a delicious weeknight meal or delectable dessert.

The Basics

Every kitchen needs these essential kitchen items – these are basics you will use every day, and that will see some serious wear and tear, so it’s wise to invest in some durable pieces.

Silverware

Investing in silverware is a must – while you don’t need to pick an expensive set, pick some that are dishwasher-safe and durable. Additionally, consider getting a silverware organizer for your drawer so that your spoons and knives don’t have to share space. Additionally, you’ll never have to fear poking your fingers with sharp knives while trying to reach for a fork or spoon.

Dishes

Plates, bowls, and saucers are all a must when furnishing your first kitchen. Many retailers sell these in sets so that you can stock up on everything at once. When purchasing dishes, opt for porcelain. Its surface is non-porous and is dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe. Alternatively, consider bone china which is a ceramic that is also very durable and good for day-to-day use.

Cups and glasses

It may be tempting to keep all the red solo cups from your college years, but investing in nice glassware can easily improve your kitchen. Get a set of four to six glasses to serve water, cocktails, or sodas in. Glassware can be hard to clean and keep smudge-proof. Opt for glasses with faceted design so you don’t have to worry about fingerprints.

Mugs

Wether you drink coffee, or tea, or want to make a cup of soup, a mug is a must! Mugs can quickly stack up and take up cabinet space, so if your walls have room, you can consider a mug rack. This saves on storage space and keeps your beautiful ceramics out on display!

Mixing Bowls

Even if you’re not a professional chef, you’ll need a mixing bowl or two. These are handy when making batter (for brownies or pancakes, perhaps!), combining ingredients for meals like salads, or storage of leftovers.

Spoons and spatulas

Once you have the silverware covered, you’ll also need some big spoons and silicon spatulas for cooking, stirring, and serving. Consider getting a set of wooden spoons, as they will last for years and are heat resistant – just don’t put them in the dishwasher (it can damage the wood)!

Knives

Every aspiring chef needs a good set of knives. While you don’t need to go for the top-of-the-line knives, you will use these plenty, so get some that will last. Out of all the types of knives to purchase, be sure to have a chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife. You’ll need a cutting board as well – grab either a plastic or wooden board that is big enough to cut a few vegetables or fruits at a time. Plastic cutting boards are lightweight and easy to clean but can damage and stain over time. Wood cutting boards are hard to clean but may be more aesthetically pleasing, easier on your knives, and more sanitary (as long as it’s properly maintained). Consider getting a magnetic knife strip or knife block to store your sharp objects so they are out of the way and stored safely.

Pots and Pans

Boiling water is the most basic cooking skill, but you can’t do it without a pot! Grab a few pots and pans to furnish your cabinets with – you’ll need at least one large skillet (between 10-12 inches across), one deep pot (between six to eight inches deep), and one medium-sized pan. You can invest in a nice set to last years, or if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, grab a few cheaper, non-stick options online or at a local retailer.

Storage

For both big and small kitchens, storage is a must. If you have plenty of cabinet space, it is wise to get some organizers, such as spice racks or storage bins. This helps your pantry items to stay organized and easily accessible. As far as food storage goes, you need to get some form of glass or plastic storage containers. Though plastic bins are cheaper, glass food storage containers will last longer, are microwave (and sometimes oven) safe, and can be used as table dishes.

Small appliances

While these appliances may not be absolutely necessary, it’s important to choose appliances that fit your needs.

Coffee maker or electric kettle

For tea and coffee drinkers, a coffee maker or electric kettle is necessary. An electric kettle can also be used for boiling water for pasta or small dishes. If you’re looking to get a coffee maker but not break the bank, consider a French press – these small coffee makers are cheaper than a Keurig or Nespresso and can make small batches of coffee.

Dish drying rack

Regardless of if you have a dishwasher or not, investing in a dish rack is a must. There are many options for these, some resting over the sink (which is particularly useful if you lack counter space) or more budget-friendly options that go on the countertop.

Toaster

A toaster is useful for those that enjoy a bagel or toast in the mornings, or who like toasted sandwiches for lunch.

Hand mixer

If you bake frequently, a mixer is a must – it can also be used for making vinaigrettes or eggs.

Accessories

No kitchen is complete without some accessories. Grab the following items to keep on hand:

Can opener

You can either invest in an electric appliance or an “old-school” can opener that can go in a drawer.

Strainer

This is needed for draining pasta, and can also be used to clean fruits or vegetables.

Peeler

This is necessary for peeling potatoes, apples, limes, lemons, or other fruits and vegetables.

Cheese grater

A cheese grater can be used for cheese or zesting lemons and limes!

If you’re ambitious

If you’re a skilled chef, you may want to consider investing in a few additional essential kitchen items to make your time in the kitchen as fruitful as possible.

Food processor/blender

A blender or food processor can be used to make homemade dressings, sauces, or smoothies. This is also particularly useful for vegan or vegetarian cooking, as many recipes need you to process nuts or beans.

Cast iron skillet

A step above a traditional skillet, a cast iron skillet will put the perfect sear on a steak, vegetables, or sautéed food. These skillets are known to last decades, but be sure you know how to care for them!

If you’re less comfortable in the kitchen

If you’re a student or rarely home, you may be looking to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible. In this case, it’s smart to invest in some essential kitchen appliances to make life easier.

Air fryer

These nifty appliances can cook everything from frozen French fries to roasted broccoli, making them the one-stop shop for cooking. Though it may take up a hefty amount of counter space, it’s worth it for the convenience.

Slow cooker

Similar to the air fryer, this appliance allows you to throw a bunch of ingredients into the pot in the morning and come home to a fully prepared meal.

Cleaning supplies

Kitchens can get messy quickly, so you’ll need to get some supplies to keep the space tidy. Invest in a large trash can that can hold kitchen-size bags (and a recycling bin if possible). You’ll also need a broom, dustpan, and mop to keep the floors clean. Sponges or dish scrubbing wands are useful for cleaning dishes, and for countertops, consider disinfectant wipes or reusable paper towels. You’ll also need a set of dish towels – get creative with prints and patterns!

In summary

Most of these essential kitchen items can be purchased from online stores such as Amazon or found in local retailers such as Target or Walmart. If you’re overwhelmed with choices, invest in a few, quality items and build your pantry and stock over time. Furnishing a first kitchen is a big task, but with these essential items, you’ll be on your way to hosting dinner parties in no time.
