If you’re tired of laundromats, you may want to find an apartment already with laundry in unit or purchase a laundry machine to hook up to the home’s plumbing system (with your landlord’s permission, of course). This is a major decision because choosing the wrong machine for your needs could be a costly endeavor. Doing laundry usually comes in two steps: 1.) washing the clothes, then 2.) drying the clothes. Today we’ll discuss the machine that helps with the second step, clothes dryers.

Clothes dryers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different functions, price points, and benefits. There are two main types of dryers. You can purchase either a vented dryer or a ventless dryer. Vented dryers have been popular in America for decades, but in recent years, ventless dryers have risen in popularity due to their energy efficiency and small size.

These types of dryers are the traditional appliances used in the United States for clothes drying. They require a way to output air into the outdoors (thus being “vented”). These vented dryers take in air from the room, heat it and dry the clothes in the drum, then expel the hot air outside. This way of drying clothes is fast and effective but is energy-inefficient and harmful to the environment. In some places in Europe, such as Switzerland, vented dryers are illegal because of their environmental impact. Air pollution from vented dryers is “significant” but can be mitigated through the use of dryer sheets, appliance filtration, and fabric softener.

Not all dryers require a vent to operate. Unlike vented dryers, ventless dryers are designed without a vent and dry clothes using a slightly different method. Due to the lack of a vent, ventless dryers will slowly accumulate moisture which will need to be drained through a drain hose or manually emptied from a tray. Additionally, since there is no vent, lint will also build up over time in a ventless dryer, meaning that frequent lint removal is necessary to maintain the machine.

What is a vented dryer?
