Fun Facts and History of Cobble Hill

When Cobble Hill was colonized by the Dutch, the area was used as farmland and a fort. The fort would stay standing throughout the American Revolution, and was one of the places George Washington retreated to after the Battle of Long Island.

Cobble Hill was made part of Brooklyn in 1834. In the 1850’s, Brooklyn became extremely popular, and Cobble Hill built a ton of row houses that are still standing to this day. By the 1880’s, Cobble Hill was packed with middle and upper class residents.

Cobble Hill escaped most of the negative moments NYC faced during the 20th century. An influx of immigrants kept the neighborhood afloat during the depression and a revitalization effort saw brownstones being fixed up before the movement was popular everywhere else. Today, these historic districts are pristine, and Cobble Hill is still a wildly popular neighborhood.
