The origin of the name “Corona” is a bit of a mystery. Originally called West Flushing, the general consensus is that the name appeared in 1872 due to a real estate developer deeming the neighborhood as “The Crown of Queens.”
In 1858, Corona was the site of the first baseball game to charge admission, and the neighborhood had only been created four years prior. After the name change in 1872, Corona had middling popularity for decades. However, starting in the 1940’s, many black civil rights leaders, athletes, musicians, and artists moved to the area, making it a cultural hotbed for the Civil Rights movement.
As time marched on, the area became even more diverse. By 1990, Corona was credited for making Queens the most diverse borough in NYC. That title still exists for the borough and neighborhood today, as Corona is still popular with young professionals, artists, and civic leaders.
Corona is equal parts mid-rise and low rise apartment complexes. More and more high rise buildings are developed every year, but the majority of the structures in the area are between six to 15 stories.
Corona has been a haven for artists for decades, yet it’s much more of a residential neighborhood than a strictly arts one. That theme goes for all the civic and athletic members of the community. The residents see Corona as an escape from their normal lives. A place to relax.
Relaxing is easy to do in Corona. There are multiple shopping and business districts, it’s next to a huge park, and the restaurants and bars here are perfect ways to end a busy day. Corona gives world changers a place to rest their heads.
Corona is a peaceful neighborhood with a ton of culture and outdoor activities. The schools here are great, and the neighborhood provides easy access to hospitals. It can be a bit more expensive depending on which part of the neighborhood you’re in. However, most of the neighborhood is pretty affordable. Overall, Corona is ideal for families.
The subway system does not provide direct access to Corona. However, the 7, E, M, and R trains will get you pretty close.
Biking in Corona is pretty popular. There aren’t many Citi Bike docking stations to be found here. However, there are many bike lanes and the streets are wide, so navigation is pretty easy.
Driving is very popular in Corona. The traffic is light and parking is ample.
